Defend your castle. Destroy theirs.

Castellar is a two-player card battler. Hide your units face down, then fight it out across three lanes, turn by turn.

Play it right here in your browser: no install, play as a guest or sign in. Or download it for Windows, macOS, Linux or Android below. Every build plays on the same server, so you can play anyone, on any platform.

Plan in secret. Fight in the open.

  1. Prepare. Place cards from your hand face down, within your gold. Mix in bluffs: your opponent sees only card backs.
  2. Brace. Every card flips at once. Bluffs leave the board and both armies stand revealed. No changes now: you find out if your plan holds.
  3. Battle. Take turns to move, attack, defend or watch across the three lanes. Break the towers, then the castle.

How it plays

  • Bluff your way in. Cards go down face down. A bluff looks real until the reveal. To your opponent, a bluff and a dragon look exactly the same.
  • Fight tile by tile. Move, attack, defend or watch. Every unit has its own range and movement, and a defender hits back and shields the tower behind it.
  • Break the line. Towers guard each lane. Break them to reach the castle behind.
  • Two players, one board. Live matches against real players: host a game for anyone, or a private one you share by game ID.
  • Learn it alone. How to Play is a guided match against Squire Pip. Then take on Pip, Knight Aldric or Warlord Morwen whenever you like, even as a guest.
  • Made for phones too. On a phone the board fills the screen sideways, with your hand and unit actions in drawers at the edges.

Open playtest

Castellar is in an open playtest, free to play, and things change between builds. When the game updates, it tells you. The itch app updates its installs on its own; in the browser, reload the page.

First launch. The playtest builds aren't signed by Microsoft, Apple or Google yet, so each system warns once. That is expected.

  • Windows: unzip and open castellar.exe. When SmartScreen says "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway.
  • macOS (11 or later on Intel, 13 or later on Apple Silicon): open the DMG and drag Castellar onto Applications. Open it; when macOS says it can't verify the app, click Done, then Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
  • Linux: unzip and run castellar.x86_64.
  • Android (arm64 phones): open the APK and allow "Install unknown apps" for the app you opened it from. A new version installs over the old one. On a phone the APK plays better than the browser.
